Frequently Asked Questions

What makes an active USB extension cable different from a long passive cable? An active USB extension cable includes a built-in repeater unit that restores signal integrity as the data travels. A passive cable simply carries the signal until loss makes it unusable, which is why passive Newnex USB 3.x runs become unreliable past about 16.4 ft (5 m). The repeater is what allows a single active cable to reach 100 ft (30 m).
How far can a single active USB extension cable reach? Newnex FireNEX-uLINK active extension cables are available from 16.4 ft (5 m) to 100 ft (30 m) for USB 3.0 and USB 3.2 applications. USB-C models supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode are available in shorter lengths, up to 52 ft (16 m), depending on the required USB and video capabilities.
Does an active USB extension cable need an external power supply? Newnex FireNEX-uLINK active USB extension cables are bus-powered and do not require an external power supply. The FireNEX-uLINK-C2 enhanced bus-power series can provide up to 5V/1.5A to the connected device.
Can I add a short passive cable to the end of an active extension cable? Yes. A short, high-quality device cable can normally be connected at the female end of an active USB extension cable. However, additional cable length can affect signal integrity, so for longer runs Newnex recommends choosing the appropriate active cable length rather than joining multiple extension cables.
Which connector combinations are available? NTC stocks USB A to A female, A to B, A to Micro B, A to C, and USB-C to C active extension cables. Locking options are also available, including dual-screw USB-C and M2 screw-locking Micro-B connectors, for machine vision, industrial equipment, and other vibration-sensitive applications.
Can I daisy-chain multiple active USB extension cables? Yes, but it is not generally recommended. Daisy-chaining active extension cables can work in some applications, but compatibility depends on the host, device, cable lengths, and number of repeaters. Contact NTC before purchase for help confirming the configuration for your application.
